Did You Run Out Of Propane Last Month?I don't know about you, but it was HARD finding propane last month. The dockworkers were on strike here in Hawaii and on the Mainland. Propane wasn't getting delivered! Why is that a problem? For many who live off grid, propane is a major source of energy that's used to cook with as well as heat water with. This propane shortage should be a wake-up call for you. The time is now to find alternatives. I recently made two very important videos highlighting alternatives to propane. One was on the HomeBiogas Digestor. It's a relatively new product that acts as a compost toilet that not only provides fertilizer for the garden, but generates methane gas to cook with or to use to heat your water. Be sure to check it out HERE. I also posted a video on the GoSun Solar cooker. I recently purchased this solar cooker and I have to say that it works amazingly. Food cooked to perfection by the power of the sun in less than an hour. You can check that video out on Youtube as well. What To Plant & Harvest This MonthThere is a lot to harvest this month, but most of it is in the veggie garden rather than the orchard. Of course there's the coconut, banana, avocado, rambutan and mango this month (among others), but in the veggie garden (depending on where you live) you should have tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, green onions, cooking greens and more, ready to harvest and eat. But if you want to know more about what's available during what month here in Hawaii, check out my eBook below. Just by knowing when to plant what will make a HUGE difference with whether or not you find success in the garden! |

September In The Tropical Garden Homesteadinʻ Hawaii Starting A Garden When All You Have Is Rock The question I get asked most has to be this one, "How do you start a garden when all you have is rock?" I figure that I may as well take a moment and try and explain how to do it. You see, much of Hawaii Island has shallow soils, in fact, a lot of it is just rock. (If you're one of those blessed by soil, you can snicker and move on) So how do you grow in soils that are so rocky? There are a few...
